Hybrid vs. Teardrop Lash Lift Shields: Stop Guessing and Start Customizing
If you've ever stared at your lash lift shield collection thinking, "Wait... should I use the Hybrid or the Teardrop?" — welcome to the club.
This is honestly one of the biggest questions I get from lash artists during trainings. And the truth is, neither shield is "better." They're just designed to create completely different results.
Once you understand how the shape of the shield changes the final curl, you'll stop choosing shields based on habit and start choosing them like an artist.
First Things First: The Shield Creates the Curl
Here's the easiest way to think about it:
The lash shield is the mold.
The lashes simply follow whatever shape you place them on.
The biggest difference between the two isn't the silicone—it's where the highest point (the apex) of the shield sits. That tiny design change completely changes the finished lift.
Team Hybrid Shield 💚
This is my everyday go-to.
If I could only own one shield, it would probably be the Hybrid because it's incredibly forgiving and works beautifully on the majority of clients.
The Hybrid Shield is exactly what it sounds like—a blend between a traditional rod and a flat shield.
Instead of forcing the lash into an extreme curl, it creates:
✔️ A beautiful vertical lift at the root
✔️ A soft curve through the ends
✔️ An open-eye effect that still looks natural
One thing I personally love is that the lash tips don't end up looking like they're trying to touch the client's brows (we've all seen those lifts 😅).
The result feels lifted without looking stiff.
I reach for a Hybrid Shield when my client has:
- Medium to long natural lashes
- Almond or balanced eye shapes
- Clients asking for an "open-eye" look
- Someone who wants noticeable results without looking overly dramatic
Basically...
If your client says:
"I want my lashes lifted but I still want them to look soft."
I'm probably grabbing the Hybrid.

Team Teardrop Shield 💖
Now...
When I want drama...
I'm grabbing the Teardrop.
The Teardrop Shield is built differently.
It's thickest right at the base and tapers quickly, creating a much sharper lift directly from the root. Instead of forming a rounded "C" curl, it pushes the lashes upward at a much steeper angle, creating a dramatic lift while keeping the lashes relatively straight through the ends.
This shield is honestly a game changer for clients that are difficult to lift.
I almost always choose a Teardrop Shield for:
✨ Hooded eyes
✨ Short natural lashes
✨ Downturned lashes
Why?
Because the Teardrop literally helps "jump" the lashes out from underneath the lid.
Instead of the lift disappearing into the hood, the lashes project forward and become much more visible.
It also squeezes every millimeter of visible length out of shorter lashes, making them appear significantly longer without extensions.

Don't Choose Your Shield Based on Your Favorite...
Choose It Based on Your Client.
One mistake I see newer artists make is using the exact same shield on every single client.
That's like using one brow wax for every skin type.
Customization is what separates a good artist from a great one.
Before I ever pick a shield, I'm looking at three things:
1. Eyelid Sensitivity
Some clients simply tolerate certain shield shapes better depending on how their eyelid sits.
2. Desired Drama
Do they want soft and effortless?
Or do they want everyone asking if they got extensions?
3. Eye Shape
Eye shape changes everything.
A hooded eye needs something very different than a naturally open eye.
My Personal Rule
Here's the shortcut I teach in class:
Hybrid = Soft luxury lift
Teardrop = Bold transformation
Simple.
From there, refine your choice based on lash length and eye shape.
The more lash lifts you perform, the faster this decision becomes.
Eventually you'll glance at your client and immediately know which shield is going to give them the best result.

They happen when the right artist chooses the right shield. 💚
